STEVE RICHARDSON'S JEWELS DAY WRAP

Sunday 6th June, 2010

David Butcher - Richardson's new favourite driver !

Harness Bookie Steve Richardson heads off on holiday thankful that Jewels day ended on a high for the "book".

05 June Cambridge Harness Fixed Odds ‘Jewels’ Report

Race 1: 4 Year Old Mares
Winner – ‘Beaudiene Bad Babe’ opening final field odds $2.00 & closed $1.70 (tote $1.60)
Punters got off to a great start with the favourite ‘Beaudiene Bad Babe’ overcoming a second line draw to win easily by two lengths. We made a slight profit in singles on her but in multi-wagers it wasn’t the result we wanted. The late money came for ‘Crystal Star’ (7th) $6.00 - $5.50.

Race 2: 2 Year Old Trot
Winner – ‘Kylie Ree’ opening final field odds $2.60 & closed $2.20 (tote $2.30)
There was plenty of inspired support for the winner as soon as we opened the "final field" market on the race following her impressive second placing at the recent Saturday Cambridge workouts. We opened her at $26 on the "futures" market and we took a $500 wager on her at those odds so well done to the customer that got on. Our ‘book’ favourite ‘Paramount Geegee’ broke at the start and after that it was all one way traffic home for the tote favourite. We only had a small liability on the winner on the ‘final field’ book but she was by far the best backed in multi-wagers.

Race 3: 2 Year Old Fillies
Winner – ‘Bettor Cover Lover‘ opening final field odds $2.00 & closed $2.00 (tote $2.20)
Brent Mangos drove the $2.00 shot as she was the best runner in the race and she delivered with a comprehensive win. Surprisingly the early money came for ‘Collectable’ (8th) as the mail was she didn’t trial that well on the previous Saturday, she opened at $6.00 on the "final" field book & closed at $4.80. ‘Navarra Franco’ (5th) was a bad result in the ‘futures’ book and we did take some late "final field" money on her at $21. The winner was a good result in the ‘single’ book but the multi money is starting to avalanche. With the first three races going to the favorites ‘sliced bread’ is in serious trouble to ‘winning favorites at Cambridge Raceway’.

Race 4: 3 Year Old Trot

 (Vulcan)
Winner – ‘Vulcan’ opening final field odds $7.00 & closed at $16 (tote $15.10)
The favourite ‘Miami H’ opened at $2.00 on the ‘final field’ book (closed $1.80 tote), he was heavily backed in multi-wagers but broke after 200m and basically got us on the right side of the ledger. We did take a $1,000 wager on the winner on the ‘futures’ book at $31 so he did open on the ‘final field’ market short until we could reduce the overall liability on him but that was one result we didn’t mind paying out on.

Race 5: 3 Year Old Fillies

 (De Lovely)
Winner ‘De Lovely’ opening final field odds $1.50 & closed $1.50 (tote $1.50)
A lot of people thought the $1.50 opening ‘fixed odds’ on the winner was too short but the only thing too short was the ‘fixed odds’ interest we could attract for her rivals. Drew one, lead & won in a NZ record time for three year old fillies. The favorite juggernaut at Cambridge is back on-track and a few customers have walked past the "final field" tent reminding us about the money we lost at the ‘Jewels’ Cambridge 2008. There"s more chance of us forgetting our names than that result and if we had a dollar for every time we have been reminded over the past two years we could have squared the ledger for that day.

Race 6: 4 Year Old Trot

 (I Can Doosit)
Winner: ‘I Can Doosit” opening final field odds $2.00 & closed $2.60 (tote $2.80)
We opened the winner at $2.00 and he paid $2.80 the tote which surprised us as this was one runner we thought was one of the best bets on the day so we were happy to see him virtually unwanted in single trading. We gave good over’s on "Dr Hook" ($5.00) & that’s where all the late money went. ‘Ima Gold Digger’ a $3.00 closing second favourite was a bad liability for us on the ‘futures’ book as he opened at $26 and was well backed at those odds.

Race 7: 2 Year Old Colts & Geldings
Winner: ‘Major Mark’ opening final field odds $1.60 & closed $2.00 (tote $1.90)
It’s not often that we cheer home a Purdon & Payne trained favourite but with a $1,000 wager taken on ‘The Muskeg Express’ at $41 (closed $3.00 tote) on the ‘futures’ book along with heavy multi action we got the result we wanted. Outside the first two favourites it was hard to lay the rest of the field. It’s going to be a long time before you see double figure odds again on ‘The Muskeg Express’ after his last two placings.

Race 8: 4 Year Old Entires & Geldings
Winner: ‘Tintin In America’ opening final field odds $2.30 & closed $2.00 (tote $2.10)
Many thought this favourite wouldn’t be winning from his second line draw but he got a great run through and a lap from home this race was over. The big mover was ‘Sleepy Tripp’ (5th) which opened at $4.50 and closed at $4.20. No damage in single wagering on the winner but he made it seven from eight favourites to salute and the tip is buy shares in the company that produces "panadol" as we just purchased our third box for the day.

Race 9: 3 Year Old Colts & Geldings

 (Russley Rascal)

Winner: ‘Sir Lincoln” opening final field odds $10 & closed $26 (tote $18)
Up to this point in time we were ahead of punters but we were losing close to six figures on the favourite "Russley Rascal" "and it was going to be close to a break even day if he won which given the results we thought was great effort but then we remembered the ‘futures’ book’ on the race. After checking the position Stephen King received word he had some serious new competition down-under. We didn"t bother looking to see where all the damage had come from on the "futures" book on the favourite as we were feeling a bit flat with this updated position and we were going to recommend that any future "Jewels" at Cambridge may as well be held on the 25th December.

We opened the favourite ‘Russley Rascal’ at $1.80 and took a couple of decent wagers at that price. After 48 hours it was obvious this was going to be the best backed multi runner we have ever seen. When we had his odds at $1.30 we had a few calls that he was at ridiculous odds and they were not wrong as he closed at $1.20. We were resigned to paying out on the shortest closing priced favourite on the day but he had a tough duel with Gomeo Romeo (12th) and the race was set-up for the winner ‘Sir Lincoln’ who had enjoyed a great trip. A huge run to finish third by the favourite and he was no doubt on the float trip home by the time our heart rates returned to their normal levels.

So overall a good "Jewels" raceday for the ‘book’ but we still need a couple more results like today’s at future Cambridge ‘Jewels’ to recoup our 2008 effort (see guys we don"t forget).

It’s still scary to think what the last race would have been for the "final field" & "future" books if ‘Miami H’ and ‘Russley Rascal’ had of won to make it 9/9 winning favourites but then again this report would have been very simple to write with only two words required ‘The End"!
